You'll also need to pay for the stations in the towns you serve as well as the towers and platforms required to load the cows, lumber, coal and other commodities in the game. From here it's simply a matter of linking up the supply to the demand. To help you get oriented to all this, you'll be able to see for each town the goods they offer, the goods they need and the goods they process. If you want to transport passengers, you'll need to buy passenger cars. If you want to transport grain, you'll need to buy grain cars. Each car type is good for one type of commodity.
When the locomotive is purchased, you'll have to buy cars to carry along behind it. Each of the locations will also have their own historically appropriate local trains. There are something like thirty different trains in the game, each of which played a significant role in the history of railroading, from the primitive Grasshoppers to the ubiquitous American models. Once you have some track laid, you'll need to purchase a locomotive to carry your cargo. You will have some control over this if you wanted to build tracks over a mountain rather than through it. The game will automatically determine whether or not you'll need bridges or tunnels and will purchase and place those accordingly. Laying new track is as simple as dragging and drawing lines on the map. You'll still have to work hard to beat out the Vanderbilts and Morgans who are competing against you but you won't have to deal with the excessive sprawl of the previous games. or a single European country like France, Germany or England.
Maps in Railroads! might only cover the ground between New York and Washington, D.C. Instead of representing all of Europe or the entire coastline of America, you'll be playing on much smaller fields.
